Further Education and Careers
Supporting your next steps
Guiding you towards your future
Your progression into Key Stage 5 is a significant milestone. At Mossbourne Sixth Form, we recognise that your development into a confident, articulate young adult extends far beyond academic success. For this reason, we place equal emphasis on character, independence and ambition, alongside the pursuit of outstanding academic qualifications.
Sixth Form is a time of important decisions. Choosing what to study and determining your next steps—whether university, apprenticeship or employment—can be life-changing. Our dedicated Higher Education and Careers Team is central to this journey. With specialist expertise and a deep understanding of both UK and international pathways, they provide tailored guidance to ensure you are equipped to make informed, aspirational choices.
Throughout Year 12, we encourage you to reflect on your strengths and interests while broadening your horizons through a carefully structured programme of taster lectures, careers talks and university visits. For those considering apprenticeships or direct entry into employment, our team offers expert support in navigating competitive application processes and understanding the expectations of leading employers.
Higher Education and Careers Programme
Preparing you for success beyond Sixth Form
Our comprehensive programme ensures that every student benefits from personalised support. Alongside bespoke UCAS guidance, students have access to a wide range of enrichment opportunities, including career networking events, work-based insight days and high-quality mentoring from major international organisations.
All students undertake a two-week work experience placement in the summer term of Year 12, providing valuable insight into potential career pathways and the realities of the workplace. In addition, guest speakers and representatives from a wide range of local employers and industry sectors are routinely invited to deliver talks, offering students first-hand insight into employment and apprenticeship opportunities. Students also have the opportunity to attend university and apprenticeship fairs, where they can engage directly with a broad range of national and international institutions and employers.
These experiences are designed to develop employability skills, confidence and professional awareness, ensuring that students are well prepared for life beyond Sixth Form.
Our experienced Higher Education and Careers Team works closely with form tutors, who develop a strong understanding of each student over time and are therefore well placed to provide detailed and supportive references. As a result, we are proud of our strong track record in supporting students to secure their intended destinations.
Oxbridge
Raising aspirations, achieving excellence
We offer a comprehensive and highly supportive programme for students aspiring to study at Oxford or Cambridge. With established links to Wadham College, Oxford and Clare College, Cambridge, students benefit from a range of enriching opportunities, including university visits, academic taster days and interview preparation workshops.
Applying to Oxbridge is both demanding and rewarding. Our designated Oxbridge Senior Tutor provides expert guidance, nurturing intellectual curiosity while developing critical thinking and academic debate. Prospective applicants attend weekly sessions designed to stretch and challenge, including lectures, discussions, cultural visits and engagement with industry experts. This ensures that students are fully prepared to meet the demands of the application process and thrive at the highest academic level.
Potential Oxbridge applicants are invited to our “Early Applicant Day”, where masterclasses covering the admissions process are delivered. Students are supported in crafting a personal statement and developing their interview skills, receive personalised feedback from an Oxbridge graduate, and take part in a mock interview.
In the Autumn Term of Year 13, the focus shifts to finalising personal statements, preparing for interviews and receiving guidance for admissions tests. Multiple mock interviews are conducted with subject experts from our extensive network of Oxbridge alumni and university professionals.
Year after year, we are proud of the students who progress to Oxbridge and look forward to welcoming future cohorts who will follow in their footsteps.
