Enrichment

At Mossbourne Port Side Academy, extracurricular provision is an integral part of academy life, providing structured opportunities before school, during lunch and after school for every pupil to participate, develop skills and strengthen their sense of belonging.

Enrichment is carefully organised across the week, ensuring pupils can access academic support, sport, leadership and creative activities in a consistent and purposeful way.

We are committed to ensuring equity in provision for all students, which is why we dedicate significant time inside the timetabled curriculum to co-curricular provision.

The Bourne Scholar Programme

Unique to Mossbourne, the Bourne Scholar is a carefully planned carousel of enrichment underpinned by the four pillars of community, culture, scholarship and character. All students study topics such as Climate Change, First Aid, Philosophy, Charity & Advocacy, Ancient Worlds and Diversity. Students are encouraged to ask questions and find their voice in these fascinating lessons, equipping them with the high-leverage vocabulary, ideas, knowledge and oracy needed to excel in the world.

Other Opportunities

Below is an indicative summary to illustrate the many enrichment opportunities open to Mossbournians. Please note this list is subject to change, depending on the interests of students and staff:

  • Academic support is embedded into the weekly enrichment offer. Homework Club runs after school throughout the week, with additional lunchtime and Friday study sessions available in the library. Quiet Reading and independent study opportunities ensure pupils have a calm, focused space to consolidate learning.

The library is open daily at break and lunch, reinforcing a culture of reading and scholarship. These structured sessions promote independence, resilience and strong study habits across all year groups.

  • Pupils are able to develop creativity through activities such as Art, Word Games, and Needlework. These clubs provide opportunities for artistic expression, creativity and practical skill development within a supportive environment.

Creative enrichment complements the wider curriculum and enables pupils to build confidence while exploring individual interests.

  • Sport is a central feature of the extracurricular programme. Pupils can participate in Girls’ Football, Boys’ Indoor Football, Basketball, Netball, Badminton and Table Tennis across different year groups.

Clubs run at lunchtime throughout the week, ensuring consistent access to physical activity. These sessions promote teamwork, discipline, resilience and healthy competition while encouraging broad participation across year groups.

  • The Combined Cadet Force programme, available to pupils from Year 8 upwards, provides structured leadership development and character education. Cadets meet weekly and participate in activities that foster responsibility, teamwork and commitment.

  • Beyond sport and academics, pupils benefit from a wide range of inclusive clubs that help build friendships and strengthen community.

The consistent weekly timetable, spanning from 8:00am Breakfast Club through to after-school Homework Club, reflects the academy’s commitment to providing a structured, supportive and engaging enrichment offer for all pupils.

Together, the extracurricular provision at Mossbourne Port Side Academy ensures that pupils are supported academically, developed physically and nurtured socially — reinforcing high expectations and a strong culture of participation across the academy.

Assemblies, our Friday trip programme and standalone cultural events such as Black History Month and Culture Week ensure students’ experiences are culturally rich and socially grounded.

Together, Mossbourne’s extracurricular provision ensures that every student leaves not only with exceptional qualifications, but with the confidence, character and cultural capital to thrive at the highest levels.
