At Mossbourne Community Academy, we are passionate about enriching students’ experiences beyond the academic curriculum. We are committed to ensuring equity in provision for all students, which is why we dedicate significant time inside the timetabled curriculum to co-curricular provision. 

The Bourne Scholar Programme

Unique to Mossbourne, the Bourne Scholar is a carefully planned carousel of enrichment underpinned by the four pillars of community, culture, scholarship and character. All students study topics such as Climate Change, First Aid, Philosophy, Charity & Advocacy, Ancient Worlds and Diversity. Students are encouraged to ask questions and find their voice in these fascinating lessons, equipping them with the high-leverage vocabulary, ideas, knowledge and oracy needed to excel in the world. 

Prep Co-Curricular Programme

From Cookery to Dungeons and Dragons, Manga to Backgammon, there is something for everyone. All students choose at least two clubs to attend each year, ensuring that all students are supported in finding new hobbies or nurturing existing ones. 

Other Opportunities

Below is an indicative summary to illustrate the many enrichment opportunities open to Mossbournians. Please note this list is subject to change, depending on the interests of students and staff: 

  • Students extend their curiosity through opportunities such as UKMT Maths Challenge, Learning Area enrichment weeks, Mossbourne Architecture Club, Target Oxbridge, the Brilliant Club, Community Languages, Additional Elective GCSEs (including Turkish, Latin and Polish) and A Level preparatory programmes. Oracy is central, with Debate Mate, Talk the Talk, Poetry Recital Competition and the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge building articulate, confident communicators. 

  • Creativity thrives through Academy Production, Band, Choir, Music Showcases, peripatetic music lessons, Drama Club, Creative Writing Club, Film Club, Arts and Crafts, Samba Band and drama club. These experiences cultivate collaboration, discipline and artistic excellence. 

  • A broad sports programme includes Rugby, Girls’ Football, Girls’ Basketball, Netball, Cross Country, Sports Leaders and table tennis. Through competition and teamwork, students develop resilience, leadership and pride. 

  • Character and civic responsibility are fostered through Student Ambassadors, Student Council, the Combined Cadet Force, NHS Cadets, Duke of Edinburgh Award, volunteering to support younger children inside school and at the Mossbourne primary schools, charitable action, advocacy projects and personal development days. Students are encouraged not only to participate but to lead and serve. 

  • From Chess and Board Games to Science Club, Japanese and German Club, Cinema and Comedy Club, our enrichment clubs provide welcoming spaces for exploration, friendship and shared interests. 

Assemblies, our Friday trip programme and standalone cultural events such as Black History Month and Culture Week ensure students’ experiences are culturally rich and socially grounded. 

Together, Mossbourne’s extracurricular provision ensures that every student leaves not only with exceptional qualifications, but with the confidence, character and cultural capital to thrive at the highest levels. 

Music Specialism

At Mossbourne Community Academy, Music is a defining specialism and a key part of academy life. Our vision is to provide every student with access to a rigorous, aspirational and culturally rich music education, regardless of background or prior experience. 

Music is both a subject of academic study and a powerful vehicle for personal development. Through performance, composition and musical analysis, students 

develop discipline, creativity, collaboration and confidence. A strong foundation at Key Stage 3 enables pupils to read notation, understand musical theory and engage with a wide range of genres, preparing them for further study at GCSE and A Level. 

Our co-curricular programme is extensive and inclusive. Students can participate in Orchestra, Choir, Band, ensembles and regular Music Showcases, with opportunities to perform at concerts, community events and Mossbourne Federation performances. Peripatetic instrumental lessons provide specialist tuition across a range of instruments, ensuring technical excellence and progression. 

State-of-the-art facilities and expert teaching staff create an environment of high expectations and musical ambition. Performance is central to our culture: students are encouraged to take the stage, refine their craft and develop the resilience and presence that comes from public performance.
